Scope
Physiology publishes focused review articles written by leaders in their fields. These articles are peer reviewed and highlight major cutting-edge advances in different fields of physiology. The Editorial Board for Physiology comprises leaders in the broad field of physiology and meets annually to discuss and recommend leading-edge topics for review articles as well as the scientists who could best write these review articles. The review articles are approximately 6–7 printed pages—excluding references, tables, and figure legends. These are short-format reviews, and, as such, they are not meant to be comprehensive. Instead, we ask authors to focus the review by identifying what is known and especially unknown on the topic. In particular, we encourage you to be forward-thinking, setting the conceptual framework for the area being reviewed and identifying the transformative research that will drive this area in the future. Key issues that are considered in review articles include: Brief description of the current status of the field. A perspective of where the field is going. Discussion of the current controversies in the field, the reasons for disagreement, and the studies that might resolve conflicts. Discussion of the clinical significance of research in the field. One major advantage of writing a review article for Physiology is that authors work with our professional artist in the production of high-quality figures. This artwork and the high-quality format of the printed version of the journal have resulted in high visibility of our reviews and widespread didactic use of the figures.
